THE U.S. MILITARY POST OFFICES IN THE MARSHALL ISLANDS
1959 TO DATE
The Marshall Islands has hosted, and still hosts, U.S. Military Bases served by Postal facilities which at one time or another included the island name in their cancellations. These offices were, at least from 1959, operated as Military Contract Branch Offices of Honolulu, Hawaii Post Office, but previously operated purely as APO's. Following the transfer of responsibility for postal matters in the Marshall Islands to the Marshall Islands Postal Service on May 2 1984 the Post Offices at the two remaining U.S. Military bases reverted to the status of U.S. A.P.O.'s.
Enewetok Atoll from 1959 - closed in 1980 but existed as a military P.O. from at least 1947.
Kwajalein Atoll from 1959 but existed as a military P.O. from the mid 1940's
Roi-Namur Branch of Kwajalein P.O. from 1959 but existed as a military P.O. from the mid 1940's.
The latter two offices are currently open though neither Kwajalein (APO AP 96555) or Roi-Namur (APO AP 96557) now include the island name in their cancellations and both operate as Army Post Offices.
Because they are U.S. Army Post Offices these two offices use U.S. Postage stamps despite being within the territory of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
